June 11, 2014 Newsletter

Reflections on the 2013-2014 school year, by your exiting PTO Board:

We started our year with the holiday Sukkot

And when asked for a Sukkah we did not even have to vote

We brought volunteers and lumber we did buy

And it was built beautifully on the very first try!

The Shabbat dinner as always was nice and relaxing

Although dinner for 300 is extremely taxing!

We looked at the stars and together we did pray

All in all it was a very peaceful day

We shopped til we dropped

Our credit cards never stopped

Which helped raise money for our school

Which was really oh so cool

Thanksgivikuh this year brought turkey and pie

And many donations our parents did buy

To ensure that those who needed it got enough to eat

Their appreciation was enough to knock us off our feet

At the Chanukah party everyone was in a great mood

And of course we provided some delicious food

And asked everyone to bring a book or a toy

To give away to another girl or boy

The kids wanted to spin dreidels and they could not wait

To watch the magician make Dr. Gereboff levitate!

At Purim we did our Mishloach Manot

And donated to others that we did not know

We then did another donation day

To help various organizations in just about every way

The donations filled up many a ride

When we dropped it all off, we were filled with pride

In April our teachers we did appreciate

And as usual, we really could not wait

To show them the things we had in store

At the lunch — tropical drinks we did pour!

We showed them we appreciate the way that they teach

By making them feel like they were sitting at the beach

At Wornickfest DJ Max brought the groove and brought the funk

Even principals Nicole and Dan the kids did dunk

Joel, Adam and Alex were good sports as well

The kids really loved it when into the water they fell!

The raffle prizes this year were crazy!

Trying to remember them is hard–it is all a bit hazy

But the excitement was really so incredibly great

Although calling the raffle ran really late

People walked away with many a prize

And a look of wonder in their eyes

We are ending this year with a big thank you

We appreciate all of you, we really do!

Our parents and teachers help make our events run

So that everyone can have a whole lot of fun

Most of the Board is retiring this year

Which we expect to bring more than one tear

But the new Board taking over is ready to rock

They eagerly await their turn, they are watching the clock!

So get ready for them to take over next year

And above all else, please please  VOLUNTEER!!!

We wish all of you a wonderful, relaxing summer—see you in August!

Michele, Laurie, Rebecca, Rechelle, Lily, Elizabeth and Dominique

June 6, 2014 Newsletter

All:

We hope that everyone enjoyed their short break from school in the midst of the end of year craziness! Although we are supposed to be winding down, it seems like an endless stream of parties, ceremonies, outdoor education trips, presentations and concerts during the last several weeks, in addition to Wornickfest, which we believe was our best yet!

On the subject of Wornickfest, congratulations to Jacob Cohen (Middle School) and Helena Cohen (Elementary School) as the top two raffle ticket salespeople! They will each receive a $100 gift card from the store of their choice. We also congratulate the 5th grade for selling the most raffle tickets as a class. They will be receiving a special “sweet treat” to acknowledge their efforts.

In this Edition:

1. Your new PTO Board

=================================

1. Your new PTO Board: It is really hard to believe that next week marks our last of the 2013-2014 school year! Here on your PTO Board, the end of school is somewhat bittersweet as 6 of the 7 of us end our terms and exit the Board, making way for your new officers who officially take office July 1, 2014.  As a reminder, your new PTO Board members are:

Rebecca Schwartz: Vice President Tikkun Olam (returning Board member)

Daphne Kaufer: Vice President Elementary /Middle School

Tara Bantwal: Treasurer

Scott Urman: Vice President Technology and Communications

Audrey Muller: Secretary

We will be making an announcement on the President position shortly—if not by next week, certainly during the summer.

All of your new officers are armed with great ideas and a lot of excitement to begin their respective terms. We also have several parents who have offered to assist the Board on various events, although not “officially” as Board members. If you would like to help plan or chair an event, please email us at pto@wornickpto.com and we will pass your name on to the new Board.

We again thank you for another great year!

Check back next week for our special end of the year message…..

May 28, 2014 Newsletter

All:

Thanks to everyone for attending Wornickfest—we hope that everyone had as much fun as we did!! We raised more money than ever before, which will help fund all of our events and programs for the school year. We were so happy to see everyone having fun, and equally happy to see some of our new Wornick families attending, getting acclimated for the 2014-2015 school year.

We know that the end of school is hectic, and really appreciate your continued support.

In this Edition:

1. Special Thanks

2. I won a prize, how do I get it?

3. Chai Hours

++++++++++++++++++++

1. Special Thanks:  We have so many people to thank for their help with Wornickfest, including (but not limited to):

Mixwell Entertainment, for providing DJ Services. Max does Bar and Bat Mitzvahs like no one else, and graciously donated his time to our event. If you are planning an event, we cannot recommend anyone more.

Wild Blackberry Sophisticated Tees, for outfitting some of the PTO Board and our DJ during the event. We were looking good! For more information, contact Tara Bantwal, Wornick Mom and future PTO Treasurer. She can hook you up!

Piazzas Fine Foods, who donated all of the food for the event. Piazzas has been so generous to our Wornick community, and is now offering a whole line of Kosher products as well as Kosher meat orders for those that are regular Piazzas shoppers. Please support them as they continue to support us.

Joel Abramovitz, Dan Finkel. Nicole Haire, Adam King and Alex Maslow for braving the dunk tank. The kids LOVED it. You are all rock stars in our book!

Rachel Perelman, for (as always) feeding us well, and with love. There was not an empty stomach in the crowd!

All of the amazing donors and volunteers, for making this event our best yet! We could not have done it without you, and really appreciate your help.

2. I won a prize, how do I get it? If you did not pick up your raffle prize during the event, you should have since received an email from Esther notifying you of your prize and that you can come pick up in the office. Please contact her for more information! For those that won Wild Blackberry Tees, you will work directly with Tara Bantwal to choose your preferred style and size. For any prizes that are unclaimed as of June 10, 2014, we will treat them as a donation back to PTO.

3. Chai Hours: We are at the end of the school year, with few opportunities for Chai Hours left. If you have not met your 18 hour requirement, please contact us at pto@wornickjds.org and let us know. We will see if there are other opportunities at school over the next two weeks that will help you meet your goal. If you do not meet your 18 hour goal, you will receive an invoice over the summer.

May 21, 2014 Newsletter

All:

Wornickfest is TOMORROW!! If you have not RSVP’d, you still can, but the price has gone up and WILL GO UP AGAIN tomorrow. The later people RSVP the more “last minute” the food purchases, and the more that it costs us. Imagine expecting 10 for dinner and opening the door to 50? That is what it is like for us. Despite this fact, we want you to come, eat and have fun!!

We are VERY SHORT on volunteers for the event. If we do not have enough people to run the booths, obstacle course and dunk tank, we will have to close them up. PLEASE sign up!! For those that have Middle School children, we can use them to run booths too—let us know if they are interested.

The DUNK TANK will begin promptly at 5:30: our gracious volunteers (willing victims) and their respective time frames this year are:

Joel Abramovitz (5:40 – 5:55)

Adam King (6:00 – 6:15)

Nicole Haire (6:20 – 6:35)

Dan Finkel (6:40 – 6:55)

Alex Maslow (7:00 – 7:15)

We thank them for their continue support of the PTO and encourage them to heckle our children as they try to dunk them. We expect the dunk tank to once again be a HUGE hit!

In this Edition:

1.  Wornickfest: How  does it work!?!?

2. Wornickfest: RSVP Deadline(s)

3. Wornickfest: Raffle Ticket Sales

4. Wornickfest: Volunteer Sign Up (URGENT!!)

=======================

1. Wornickfest: How does it work? For those that are new, Wornickfest is a carnival. We have “midway” style booths where the kids can try their luck at a variety of games, winning prizes just like they would at any county fair. We also have an inflatable obstacle course, and a dunk tank, featuring our teachers! We are serving a full Italian dinner (lasagna, pasta bar, salad, garlic bread….dessert) with Sangria for the adults. We also  have popcorn and cotton candy–we are a carnival after all! If that is not enough, there is face painting and a balloon team making balloon animals for the kids. Believe me, there is plenty going on. We ALSO have a DJ, who will be playing some tunes, and presiding over a dance contest… and finally: THE RAFFLE!! Winners will be drawn and announced at around 7:30 p.m.  Want to  memorialize the experience? Visit our photo booth!!

EVERYTHING is included in the admission cost, except: the dunk tank (pay at the booth) and the raffle (buy your tickets)

Everyone needs to stop at the registration desk, where they will be given a rubber bracelet, information on the various attractions, and for the first 50 women who check in….. a gift card for a complimentary 30 minute facial at Revive Spa! Woo hoo!!

Volunteering? There will be a volunteer check in booth this year to make things easier!

2. Wornickfest: RSVP Deadline(s):  If you have not done so already, please immediately RSVP for Wornickfest!!  The online RSVP system will be closing shorty—it is really important that you RSVP right away.  As we told you before, the price increased after the May 15, 2014 deadline and will increase AGAIN tomorrow.

3. Wornickfest: Raffle Ticket Sales: Raffle ticket sales are in full swing. The top sellers will receive a $100 gift card at the store of their choice! Please support your PTO (and your children) and buy your raffle tickets today!

The top selling class will also receive a special surprise…. support your class!

Remember, raffle ticket sales fund ALL of our events and programs throughout the entire school year.  We need your support!

If you have forgotten about the prizes this year (the total value of all of them is the highest yet!), check them out. We needed a raffle prizes page and a more raffle prizes page to fit them all and prizes are being added daily.

Online raffle ticket sales will be closing shortly. You will still be able to buy tickets at the event, but you will NOT be able to credit a particular child for any bought on site. Buy them online TODAY.

4. Wornickfest: Volunteers: Wornickfest is our last PTO event of the year and the last big opportunity to earn your Chai Hours. As you know, each family is responsible for putting in 18 hours of volunteer time throughout the year. For every hour missed you will be billed $18. Why? We need you! We cannot run any of our events without your help

Wornickfest is HUGE and needs a LOT of volunteers. We need people to run the carnival games, the obstacle course, help at the dunk tank, serve dinner and just about everything else. It is a ton of work, but a LOT of fun!! Please sign up to volunteer for the event, and earn your Chai Hours!

We are short on volunteers!! If we do not get the help that we need, we will need to close down the games. Do not let this happen—the kids will be so disappointed. Please sign up to help.

May 14, 2014 Newsletter

All:

Congratulations all—we have a new PTO Board for the 2014-2015 school year! Elections were Friday, May 9, 2014 and resulted in the following new officers who will be introduced at Wornickfest:

Tara Bantwal: Treasurer

Audrey Muller: Secretary

Daphne Kaufer: VP Elementary / Middle School

Scott Urman (with an assist from Cara Baker): VP Technology and Communications

AND….Rebecca Schwartz is returning for one more year as VP Tikkun Olam!

We thank all of the new officers for their support and congratulate them on their new roles.  There are still some available Board positions and some “Board adjacent” positions — if you are interested, let us know! We have some awesome Wornick parents who are helping “in the background” (hence the “adjacent”) without official titles.  We will consider them to be the “shadow PTO” (thanks Laurie) from here on out….

In this Edition:

1. Wornickfest: RSVP Deadline(s)

2. Wornickfest: Raffle Ticket Sales

3. Wornickfest: Volunteer Sign Up

=======================

1. Wornickfest: RSVP Deadline(s):  It is time to RSVP for Wornickfest!! The event is next week and we need to confirm the count for dinner. For those that are new, we serve a complete buffet “kid friendly” dinner at the event, with Sangria for the adults, and carnival snacks for the kids. We generally get around 400 people for this event, which is a lot of mouths to feed. It is really important that you RSVP by the deadline, which is May 15, 2014. Will we still accept RSVPs after the deadline? YES! But the price goes up starting the day after the deadline, and will increase as we get closer to the event. Why? Piazzas gives us all of the food for the event BUT we need to order in advance to ensure to get everything for such a large group. As we get kosher, we can’t just walk into any old place and buy groceries. The last minute buying? It costs us!

You do not want to miss this event! Why? Do you want to be the one parent who has to explain to their child why they missed dunking their teachers in our dunk tank? Who is in the tank this year? Hint: One well known school “leader,” one Middle School teacher, one Elementary School teacher and one “JS/everything else” teacher… who are they? Stay tuned to find out! Remember, this is not just an Elementary School event—we have games just for the older kids, a dance contest via our DJ and of course the dunk tank. Middle School students will love it.

2. Wornickfest: Raffle Ticket Sales:

Raffle ticket sales are in full swing. The top sellers will receive a $100 gift card at the store of their choice! Please support your PTO (and your children) and buy your raffle tickets today!

Raffle ticket sales fund ALL of our events and programs throughout the entire school year.  We need your support!

If you have forgotten about the prizes this year (the total value of all of them is the highest yet!), check them out. We needed a raffle prizes page and a more raffle prizes page to fit them all and prizes are being added daily.

The latest prize? Are you sitting down? A Movado Folio woman’s watch, valued at $600.00+!! It is gorgeous—believe me, you want this watch!

April 30, 2014 Newsletter

All:

Nothing like living in the Bay Area where it is cold and rainy, and 10 days later is 90 degrees…. whew!  We hope that all of you stay cool this week.  What is a great indoor activity you ask? Buying and selling raffle tickets of course! The competition is fierce already, with grades 5 and 6b tied for the most sales so far! We will start posting the results soon—don’t let your class be last!

In this Edition:

1. My Digital Tattoo

2. Wornickfest: Raffle

3. Wornickfest: help needed

=======================

1. My Digital Tattoo: The parent program is May 13, 2014 from 7-8:30 in the Ulam Gadol. Do not miss this crucial program to help parents help their children navigate social media. The students are having programs as well, where they are learning (in a non-threatening way) the power of social media, for both good and bad. Want to know how they are being taught? Check out this sample video, used to show the power of facebook…. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpOvYWd4KW4

One of the big messages that we can learn from too? They are teaching our children to think before they post:

Is it True?

Is it Helpful?

Is it Inspiring?

It is Necessary?

It is Kind?

This program is a “must” for all parents with children exposed to the internet (which of course is everyone…)

2.  Wornickfest: the Raffle: Night in the City. iPad. PS4. Designer Clothing. Giants Tickets. Sports Memorabilia. Yoga Classes and Gear. Smart Watch. Michael Kors Bag. Enough said?

Raffle tickets are sold online, with a special link if you are buying from more than one child . Please give credit to the child you are purchasing from as there are prizes for the top sellers and the top classes. Know that you want to help sell, but not sure what to write? We wrote it for you! Just copy our sample email and forward to friends, co-workers and family. We need your help to fund our programs and events for the entire year—-

THANK YOU for your continued support!

3. Wornickfest: help needed: We are looking for: (1) wetsuits; (2) swim parkas and (3) face painters and temporary tattoo artists to volunteer their time (yes, you get Chai hours) at Wornickfest! Have any of these items to lend to us for the event? Want to do some child painting while you are there? Email us at pto@wornickjds.org!!

April 23, 2014 Newsletter

All:

Welcome back! We hope that you had a wonderful break and are getting in the Wornickfest mood. We are vacuuming up matzoh crumbs (seriously, they are everywhere!) and counting up the raffle prizes and finding that we have outdone ourselves this year with all of the amazing prizes, which are still coming in almost daily! Have a prize to donate? We want it—our view, when it comes to prizes is that more is more 🙂

In this Edition:

1. PTO Elections / General Meeting

2. My Digital Tattoo

3. Wornickfest: the Raffle and the Prizes

==============================================

1. PTO Elections will take place at our next general meeting on May 9, 2014 after drop off.  We will have our usual breakfast and coffee, vote in our new Board members (yay!!) and talk Wornickfest. If you are interested in being on the Board next year, let us know immediately. Even if you don’t want a “formal” Board position, we have several parents that will be “behind the scenes” PTO members, helping with specific events and programs. Have a particular talent that could come in handy? We want you! It is a lot of fun, earns your Chai Hours, and gets you in on the ground floor of a lot of exciting Wornick programs. Email us at pto@wornickjds.org.

2. My Digital Tattoo: Reminder!! My Digital Tattoo is May 13, 2014 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. This is a very important program for everyone, especially those with computer savvy children (in other words, all of us). You need to know what your children are being exposed to, how to ensure that they are safe and use good judgment and how to manage social media effectively. Do not fall into the “my child would never do that” trap!

3. Wornickfest: the Raffle and the Prizes: Raffle ticket sales are ON!!! The sale of raffle tickets directly effects the PTO’s events and programs for the year, as they are the primary source of revenue (other than dues) for your PTO.  Raffle tickets are sold online, with a special link if you are buying from more than one child as we want all salespeople to get credit where credit is due!   It is really easy for you and your child to buy tickets and sell tickets to family and friends—-all you need to do is forward a link! The more tickets your child sells, the better. The top 2 sellers (one Elementary and one Middle) will receive a $100 gift card to the store of their choice. There will also be a special prize for the class that sells the most tickets. Not sure what to write? We wrote it for you! Just copy our sample email and forward to friends, co-workers and family.

Keep checking back as the prizes are coming in every day—the latest? Two DUGOUT seats to the Giants, plus luxury parking. Yes, dugout. As in practically sitting on the players laps 🙂 What could be better?

The GRAND PRIZE? A night in the City!! You will be treated to a night at a Personality Boutique Hotel of your choice, tickets to Motown (a Tony Award Winning Musical) OR another show of your choice AND given $200 to spend at the restaurant of your choice! Valued at over $750—all for one $10 raffle ticket.

What else can you win? We have so many fantastic prizes, we can’t list them all here, so check out our prize page, which is being updated almost daily with new prizes.

Buy tickets! Sell tickets! Support your PTO! Need inspiration? Check out our sample email!

April 9, 2014 Newsletter

All:

We are right in the middle of Teacher / Staff Appreciation week and are having a blast! On Monday our Teachers and Staff came in to find the Lounge converted to a coffee (and tea) bar. We had tons of gourmet coffees for use with their new machine, a variety of teas, Torani syrups, creamer, Ghirardelli caramel and chocolate “drink sauces,” biscotti ….and Madeline cookies. Instead of a week, this should last them 2 months! Tuesday followed with a made to order omelet bar (we thank our gourmet chefs, Sherry Lipson and Tracey Green), and today was massages… ahhh….more to come the rest of the week! We truly thank all of you who have pitched in so far this week, and who will be pitching in for the rest. We LOVE our Teachers and Staff and are happy to show them just how much!

In this Edition:

1. Wornickfest: the Event

2. Wornickfest: the Raffle and the Prizes

3. Wornickfest: the Volunteer Opportunities

==============================================

1. Wornickfest: the Event: For those of you who are new to our community, Wornickfest is the single biggest PTO fundraiser of the year and is also one big giant party! It is a carnival, complete with “midway” games, an inflatable obstacle course (new this year), a dunk tank (teacher “dunkees” to be identified soon!), cotton candy and popcorn, a photo booth (wait until you see our photo cut out board), a balloon man, face painting AND a full dinner with our special sparkling white sangria. There is a cost to attend, but it covers everything except the dunk tank, which is a (small) separate charge.  We have a live DJ, are adding a dance contest this year and have our biggest attraction (or so it seems): the raffle! Want more information? Check out our FAQ!

2. Wornickfest: the Raffle and the Prizes: Raffle ticket sales are the primary source of revenue (other than dues) for your PTO. The amounts raised from this one event fund all of our events and programs. Raffle tickets are sold online, with a special link if you are buying from more than one child as we want all salespeople to get credit where credit is due!   It is really easy for you and your child to buy tickets and sell tickets to family and friends—-all you need to do is forward a link! Not computer savvy and need our help? Email us at pto@wornickjds.org. The more tickets your child sells, the better. The top 2 sellers (one Elementary and one Middle) will receive a $100 gift card to the store of their choice. There will also be a special prize for the class that sells the most tickets.

Please support the PTO and support your school. Seeing family during Pesach break? Sell them raffle tickets 🙂

Why buy? First, to support your school and help the PTO continue to fund the amazing programs and events that we have all year round. What is in it for you (besides the obvious benefit)??? AMAZING PRIZES! We went completely crazy this year and have more prizes than ever, many of which are worth in excess of $500. The GRAND PRIZE? A night in the City!! You will be treated to a night at a Personality Boutique Hotel of your choice, tickets to Motown (a Tony Award Winning Musical) AND given $200 to spend at the restaurant of your choice! Valued at over $750—all for one $10 raffle ticket. What else can you win? How about a PS4? Field Club Level Giants tickets? A Michael Kors handbag? Roberto Cavalli Sunglasses? An iPad? We have so many fantastic prizes, we can’t list them all here, so check out our prize page, which is being updated almost daily with new prizes.

3. Wornickfest: Volunteer Opportunities: Wornickfest is our LAST big Chai Hour opportunity, and we need TONS of help. We will be posting the signup after the Pesach break, but will need help setting up, cleaning up, serving dinner, running ALL of the booths, monitoring the dunk tank (fighting off the crazed children trying to dunk their teacher), helping with the cotton candy and more. We try to give everyone relatively short shifts so that no one misses the fun, so end up needing more people to help. Remember, a family member can help you earn your Chai hours too.

Please remember to record your Chai hours. Any family who does not complete their 18 hours will be billed for them over the summer. Don’t let this happen to you!!

April 2, 2014 Newsletter

All:

Happy “almost” Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week! We really want to thank those who signed up to provide food and help for the luncheon next week. We can’t make our events happen without you!

Our next PTO meeting is THIS FRIDAY, April 4, 2014 after drop off. We will be discussing Teacher/Staff Appreciation, Wornickfest, Chai Hours (only a few opportunities left this year) and other PTO business. Please stop by for some breakfast—and to discuss our biggest event of the year!

In this Edition:

1. Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week

2. Parent Enrichment

3. Chai Hours / Wornickfest

4. Expect Respect

======================================

1. Teacher / Staff Appreciation Week is April 7-11, 2014 and we have a lot planned! So what exactly happens during teacher/staff appreciation week? We will tell you! On Monday our teachers will be treated to a special surprise in the teachers’ lounge (shhh… secret!). Tuesday will be our made to order breakfast day, with an amazing omelet bar and other goodies for our teachers to come and eat, or get delivered! Wednesday and Thursday we have a masseuse coming (another present will be given to them on Thursday as well) and Friday is the luncheon.  We still need parents out on the field to help with yard duty and have a few other opportunities to help. Please sign up !

In addition to Friday help, we need some help during the week on a variety of tasks. Please sign up to participate!

2. Parent Enrichment: On May 13, 2014, from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m., PTO will be sponsoring our “long awaited” parent enrichment night. We have retained My Digital Tattoo to bring a workshop on parenting in the digital age to Wornick. Find out more about this fantastic program elsewhere on our website.

This is a program you do not want to miss—see you there!

3. Chai Hours/Wornickfest: We will begin to advertise the raffle next week to allow students to get a jump on ticket sales during the Pesach break. Raffle ticket sales proceeds are our biggest single item of revenue for the year, and fund most of our programs and events.

PLEASE support the event–post it to Facebook, email your friends, encourage your children to participate. Ticket sales will be ONLINE again, to make it easier for out of town friends and family to purchase tickets. Middle School students? They can buy their own tickets to get a shot at winning the Playstation 4 console, with the “Need for Speed” included.

The top two sellers (one elementary and one middle school) will get a $100 gift card to the store of their choice and there will be incentives for the top selling class as well.

There are tons of AMAZING prizes this year, including several that are worth well over $400. Our grand prize? It is valued at over $750!! There is no auction–one $10 raffle ticket can win!!

4. Expect Respect

Shalom Bayit, an organization focused on ending domestic violence, is supporting a workshop called “Expect Respect” on April 27, 2014. It is primary focused on teens, trying to teach them about healthy relationships with their peers and future “dates.”  The goal is to teach them and teach YOU how to navigate what can be a very difficult time in your child’s life. This is a great program for those with a Middle School student. Check it out !!
